| | | Rules and guidelines for The Word Nerds Discussion Forums | Sun May 18, 2008 5:09 pm by Abe | The following usage rules for The Word Nerds Discussion apply to everyone posting to this forum:
General appropriateness. The Word Nerds' podcast audience is made up of listeners of all ages, from older elementary school through adult. Except for posts in the Rude Words forum, please keep your language and images appropriate for a PG to PG-13 audience. (If you are not from the USA, send me a PM or an email and I'll explain these ratings.) Don't walk on eggshells worrying about saying "damn," but don't drop the F-bomb throughout the forum either (except for the Rude Words forum).
Respect. Please treat your interlocutors with respect. The forum will be meaningless if we all agree on everything. On the other hand, it will become corrosive if our disagreements descend to the level of personal attack. No flaming, please. Moderators will generally use a light touch, but will be more likely to interfere in flame wars and ad hominem attacks than in any other problem with the forum.
No spam. This site is not meant to be a promotional vehicle for other businesses. Please feel free to mention your blog, your podcast, a book you have read or written, or any other such thing that might be of interest to the Word Nerds community. But you may not use this forum for commercial advertising. At the time of this writing, one thread has already been deleted because it was a blatant advertising pitch.
Normal "speech," please. Please post in a way which is consistent with "normal writing". That is, you should not post excessive numbers of emoticons, large, small or colored text, etc. Likewise, you should try not to SHOUT (by using all capital letters) or use excessive punctuation (e.g. ! and ?) in topic titles or posts.
Compartmentalize rude words. We do not plan to set up a word list to censor offensive language. We will rely on you, the members of this discussion community, to police yourselves. We have started a separate forum for the discussion of rude words. It is called "Rude Words" (duh!), and has a prominent warning in its description. Please keep all discussions of potentially offensive language in that forum. (And feel free to cut loose in that forum, while observing the separately published Rude Words Forum guidelines. WARNING! The Rude Words rules contain several rude words!)
No large files, please. The hosting for this forum is paid for out of my Starbucks coffee money. Please do not deny me that extra Grande Cafe Mocha by overloading the server with huge files. There is actually a built-in restriction on avatar file size.
Avatars. Feel free to upload an avatar (i.e., an image or logo to be associated with your name in the forum). Avatars may not be any larger than 500 x 500 pixels or 6 kb (6,000 bytes) in size. You may also link to an avatar hosted on another server. Avatars must be appropriate for all forums. Do not post an offensive image as your avatar.
Images. If you would like to share other kinds of images with everybody else, please upload them to a site such as the free Flickr, and link to them from your post. (You can include an "img" tag for a picture within a post, while pointing to a file hosted somewhere else.)
Signatures. Feel free to use a signature. Signatures may contain up to five lines (one line being that displayed on a browser opened to 800px width) of text (of small or normal size) and/or one image. Valid combinations include a single image of no more than 60px high, 468px wide and 6kB (6000 Bytes) in size. Signatures containing an image this large may also include one line of small size text. Signatures containing an image of 30px high may include up to three lines of small size text or two lines of normal size text. Images of 15px height or less may allow up to three lines of normal size text or four lines of small size text. Animated images are not allowed.
Only one account, please. Please only register once, under one identity.
Keep it legal. Any activity on the forum that represents a violation of law will not be allowed. The Word Nerds management accepts no responsibility for any violation of the law that might take place on this discussion board. Nevertheless, we will remove any post that we perceive to be a violation of the law.
Our discretion. Since we cannot anticipate all situations that might arise, please be aware that we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure that this discussion place is not disrupted or abused in any way.
